The 2001 Los Angeles mayoral election was held just six months after the 2000 Florida presidential election fiasco, but the results could not have been more different. California is no Florida when it comes to administering elections. With its progressive election system including a liberal provisional balloting law and clear standards for counting votes and certifying an electionCalifornia had few problems at the polls. Many problems, such as under- or over-voting, were avoided thanks to intensive voter education efforts and community outreach programs that addressed the unique demands of Los Angeles’ ethnically diverse population. For the nation’s largest election jurisdiction still using punch-card voting systems (which caused so many problems in Florida in 2000), Los Angeles experienced a surprisingly successful 2001 mayoral election.
